Eugene, Oregon’s far off from the first place you think of when music hot zones come to mind. New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles are without a doubt the largest music hubs of recent memory. But even with this being true, talent isn’t predicated on location. With “Orange Drive” by Khalil Romeo being an indication of this, it’s probably for the best.
From the start of the song and as the title suggests, you can guess that you’re headed somewhere. As the first sounds resonate, a guitar attaches itself, ballooning the song into a world of its own. “It’s my first collaboration with the producer, Semi/Cool”, Khalil says when asked about the creation of the song. “We linked and I just loved the beat immediately. No samples.” Filling the song with meaning, Khalil echoes “I’m feeling you” over the intro just as the track opens up. With the snare hits and bass line Khalil set ups the context of the song with the hook. “I’m trying to run it up, you got me stuck in love. My time is valuable” he intones, quickly running through the chorus. When asked what the song is about, Khalil says “It’s really about unexpectedly meeting someone and finding yourself in a relationship when you weren’t planning to be but liking it regardless.” The production work by Semi/Cool and Khalil Romeo’s relatable story floating over it provide the perfect blend of atmosphere and identity. There’s no better way to describe this combo than with the sentiment, “I’m feeling you”.
